September Update from the Spruce Class

Dear Spruce Families,

We have had a busy first month of school!  The children have been practicing each other’s names and the classroom routines. During the month of September we read many stories of peace and talked about what peace looks like. We also talked about who Maria Montessori was and how she was a Peacemaker. We had a fun time celebrating peace during our school wide Peace Celebration! Here’s a YouTube link to the song that we learn for International Peace Day and sing throughout the year.

We also introduced our fall unit of study, trees! The children have begun to paint their autumn leaves of the Pacific Northwest, which will be displayed during our tree festival in November.  We will be learning about the tree life cycle, parts of the trees, and of course, the Spruce tree! October will bring lots of opportunities to further our study of trees.

In October we will also talk about different festivals of light. This will be another unit of study that will span a few months. We will make different types of lanterns, discover different festivals of light, and will take note of how it will begin to get darker earlier outside.
